$22 Thrift Shop Speaker Haul!

July 16th, 2018

If you're not checking your local thrift shops for tech for your show, you're probably spending too much! For $22 we picked up a Proscan 2.1 audio system, 4x 8ohm surround sound speakers, and 2x 8ohm bookshelf speakers, all working, and all quality! We've found that most thrift stores restock just prior to the weekend, so shopping Friday night or early Saturday tends to yield the best results.

014 - LED Strip Lights

July 13th, 2018

LED strip lights are a great low voltage, low current, flexible, and easily installed option for effect, scene, and prop lighting. Strips range from a few inches to 30 foot +, indoor only to waterproof, and different manufacturers offer kits with various voltages and pattern options.

Recently many custom options have also become affordable and available, including aftermarket connectors to link, split, and even DMX control these light strips.

We have recently reviewed a few kits on our Youtube channel as well:

Terror Behind The Walls Behind the Scenes Tour @ National Haunters Convention 2018

June 30th, 2018

The 2018 National Haunters Convention featured a behind the scenes tour of Terror Behind the Walls, and portions of historic Eastern State Penitentiary. Being off-season the haunt was under construction and only partially available to tour. The staff and creative team were excellent, hosting a Q&A session, showing how actors work in the space of their scenes, and putting on a great speakeasy and after party.

USB powered LED tape lights

June 29th, 2018

Our local Wal-Mart finally restocked their $5 USB led tape lights. Not bad for $5, especially promising for use with a phone charger battery pack for props or costume lighting.

Halloween Show & National Haunters Convention Walkthrough

May 25th, 2018

We spent last weekend at the Halloween Show & National Haunters Convention at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City NJ. There was a great variety of vendors and classes, an awesome behind the scenes tour of Terror Behind the Walls, and a murder mystery costume ball. Here is a show-floor walkthrough video taken Friday morning just after the show opened.

Lepy LP-V9S Amplifier Review

May 7th, 2018

The Lepy LP-V9S is the perfect economy amplifier for home haunters or Pro's on a budget. This 12V amp includes an AC power adaptor but could easily be wired to a marine or car battery for trail use. It produces quality sound from either FM radio, SD Card, USB Stick, RCA, or 1/8" input. While it does lack a dedicated bass output, and won't be the loudest amp out there, you can add a line output converter to extract bass signals via RCA for extra punch if needed. Overall, a solid little economy amp for adding ambient sounds or music to scenes in your haunt.

012 - DMX Control for Haunts

May 1st, 2018

DMX, aka Digital multiplex, is a very powerful control system for stage lighting and effects. With the Mobile DJ industry embracing this technology, it is now in reach of home and pro haunters both financially, and in scaled-down applications perfect for single scenes or small home haunts. In this episode, we explain what DMX is, how it works, and how it can add infinite flexibility and capabilities to your show.

011 - Fire Alarms & Suppression Systems 101

April 8th, 2018

This episode is an awareness level primer on the basics of fire alarm systems, suppression systems, their components, and how not to be ripped off by your alarm company. This is critical to take into consideration while looking for commercial venues.

While the majority of this is tailored toward pro haunters, the key takeaways for home haunters are to include smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your venue if possible, CO detectors only last 5-7 years, and smoke detectors need to be replaced after 10 years.
